Hands-On With the Treo 700w

We've covered the new Treo elsewhere, but I figure with a product this major you can't say too much about it. I had the opportunity to use the Treo 700w last night -- to check the score on the UT-USC game, natch -- plus play with its various features. It has an amazing screen and a perfect form-factor, just like every other Treo.

But Palm switching to Windows boggles the mind. Where the old Palm-based Treo was brainlessly simple, the 700w is stuffed full of Pocket PC overkill. It's dazzlingly complex, and any current Treo user is going to have a huge learning curve getting up to speed on it.

As for the EV-DO support, it was fast, but not blazing. Web pages take a few seconds to resolve, then they quickly pop up. It's almost like the Treo has to "think about it" for a bit before it can actually load a page. Is this going to be a hit, or is the shock to the system of Windows too much for the average user? Let us know what you think.

I had a Treo 600 and was happy to trade it in on a Pocket PC running Windows. I am much happier now with my Audiovox 6601. I am glad that Palm now sports Windows. It works much better synching with Outlook.

I sold my 650, it was to difficult to use while driving. The reception and sound quality is fair at best. I replaced it with a V3 by Motorola, a far superior cell phone.

Love my Treo 650 and am horrified that Palm would go to Windows, since that's what I switched from a Samsumg i600 to get away from!

The Treo 650 is awesome - yea, few things could be better, but as a whole NOTHING touches it. If you know what you are doing there's not much you can't make it do with a very simple Palm interface. Just added TomTom to the works - now I'm convinced this phone is the baddest on the planet. DON'T get the 700..... Pocket PC = ridiculously complicated. I can already do everything you can do with Pocket Windows and tons more since the Palm platform has so many third party applications available. Had a Pocket PC once not long ago.... promptly got rid of it.

The Treo 650 does has awesome features and I boast about this product all the time. Love it...The only thing I have to complain is that the sound goes out and is not as clear as I think it could be. I hope the sound on the new Treo is much better.

The 650's volume problem is easily cured by using VolumeCare, by GoTreo Software. Bill Gates can keep the 700, I'll stick with my trusty 650.

Is Microsoft paying you guys to make propaganda of their products? I would NEVER use a phone with any type of Windows operating system. A phone, per se, needs reliability and cannot freeze or shut down by itself because of OS flaws. This "feature" by itself negates any phone with Windows.
