Sony Ericsson's Walkman is Calling

By Steve Enders

Sony lifted the lid off of a new Sony Ericsson phone on Wednesday night. Sony Ericsson 810Wait -- what's that you say? It's a Walkman MP3 player? It's a digital camera? The Sony Ericsson W810 is all three, and it grabbed my attention with it's slick on-screen interface and black-and-orange case.

The phone is a global quad-band with EDGE and Bluetooth. The Walkman plays MP3s on an expandable memory stick (up to 2GB), the device plays video and the autofocus camera shoots at 2 megapixels.

Now I'm not going to throw out my iPod just yet, but I do need a new phone. The price hasn't been set, but I'm told that it'll land somewhere in the $400 range. No carrier deals have been made yet, but I might take another look at this puppy when it lands on store shelves in a few weeks.

Still, I'm not sure about that price. What do you think: Does the W810 sound nice?

that phone is freaking sweet! but why is it so exppensive? if music is stored on cheap memory sticks, rather than expensive internal mini-hard drives (ie. iPod) then the price should be much lower. its really nice, but i'd pay $250 max for it.

I am using W600i and am very pleased with it. It is truely all-in-one gadget. The W810 seems to be better in terms of storage and pixel.....I would trade mine in for this new one.

Considering Sony Ericsson's last big phone, the 910, was first offered at the $800 range, a $400 iPhone is not too expensive. Maybe once Sony starts to produce a larger capacity memory stick, the price will makle it worth it

I think this is the coolest cell phone out there!! Its like an iPod then when your favorite songs over you can call your friends and say, "Hey dude, listen to this sweet song. Even though its like, $400 its probrally worthit.

Great specs. As for the price, is that before or after any service carrier rebates? Either way, just think about what you would spend on an mp3 player, phone, and 2mp camera separately. It's worth it.

Hate the proprietary Sony memory stick, plus the phone is way too expensive. No thanks Sony, try again!

The phone may be way cool but the DRM is so NOT! Buy this phone and give your content over to Sony because you'll be locked in to this device.

Great concept but more competition is needed to bring the price down. The camera only has 2MP and I'm sure the cost of service will be totally overpriced.
